When a medical procedure turns EVIL!
Imagine going in for surgery with an expected four-day stay, which turns into four surgeries, leaving you still in the ICU after four weeks.
BUT GOD…
Imagine your child needing a tracheostomy while awake. Just four days after undergoing two major surgeries, she can’t risk sedation. She has an incision in the back of her head and a tube in her nose. The head of anesthesiology is telling you to prepare for the possibility that your child may not survive because she has to go without air. They can’t give her air through her nose due to her surgery. Picture seeing your child, lifeless and purple, completely reliant on a ventilator. Doctors are wishing her luck but expecting the worst. A respiratory therapist is telling housekeeping that she is essentially gone.
BUT GOD…
Now imagine her beating the odds again. Picture her waking up and telling you that the head of anesthesiology and Dr. Alex Johnson from the hospital smothered her. After two days, your child wakes up, crying and explaining how she bit through two ventilator tubes because they were hurting her. She tells you she was trying to say “no.” Moreover, she recounts how the lead anesthesiologist pressed a mask down tightly on her face and then sat on her to control her. She couldn’t move her arms or legs. She was powerless to help herself. Imagine a doctor intervening, only for the lead anesthesiologist to say, “You guys know I don’t care,” not just within earshot of your awake child, but also in front of mandated reporters—her own staff.
BUT GOD…
Did they really think she would forget? Did they believe she wouldn’t survive to tell her story, or did they simply not care?
Lastly, imagine after a two-week investigation, the manager can only apologize for the behavior. They agree that it was completely inappropriate and say they don’t know what else to say. They express sorrow for everything you have been through…
I AM NOT OK..
